Write Away

by Joy DeKokI enjoy the thought of getting away to write. I’m convinced a change of scenery will be good for my projects and my illusive writing friend, Inspiration, will join me.

That’s what I was planning on our trip to Two Harbors, MN. I set out files, saved ideas to my external drive, and packed them all with great care. I pulled my clothes out of the dryer and hung them up quickly. Who cares about a few wrinkles when flow is certain to be found at the lake?

So, here I sit in our RV. Inspiration has decided to arrive fashionably late. The way things are going, she’ll put in an appearance when I get back home.

Or could it be she’s already here, in the view from the windshield? Lake Superior dances in the morning sunshine to her own internal rhythm. Men on small fishing boats work for the “catch of the day” and large vessels carrying cargo glide along the horizon close to their destination in Duluth.

I wonder if I’ve set myself up for writing failure. Those files that excited me in the packing phase irritate me now. The hammock we brought along for my husband seems to know my name. I know its embrace well and am tempted so I chastise myself – you just got up – it’s not time for a nap!

So, I took a walk hoping the practicality of exercise and the smell of pine would clear my wandering mind and prepare me for some serious writing. Instead the hammock got louder and the only writing that comes to mind is poetry.

I have articles to edit, an office grand opening to finalize, authors to market, a couple of speeches to prepare, several non-fiction projects going, and a novel to write. These are urgent projects and although I’m ahead of schedule on most of them, they should be my priority.

Urgent. Should be

I have a choice to make. I can force my way through and bury my mind in those files. Or, I can let the voice of practicality go away for awhile and heed the voice of the singer.

Her music is enchanting. It’s not the hammock I hear gently wooing me away from productivity, it’s the song of creativity. Its melody is carried on the sun warmed, pine scented breeze. The steady beat of the lake encourages waltzing instead of climbing though a mountain of projects.

So, I think I’ll grab a hot cup of coffee and go sit outside. I’ll let the music of my muse romance me for awhile. And, maybe that poetry whispering its way across my heart will find a way to the page and instead of a get-away I’ll have a write-away.

I’ll return to those files refreshed and ready because although I resist this it’s true: Creativity infuses the soul of the writer and energizes productivity.

. Nagging words. I resent them and they worry me the same way math tests did in my long ago school days.

Jonica is infertile. Stacie chooses an abortion. One is prolife the other prochoice. As their hearts break where in the world will they find healing and grace? Can shattered dreams be part of the plan?
