“Cirque du Freak – The Vampires Assistant” by Darren Shan Book Review

the vampire's assistant

First Line:

My name is Darren Shan.  I’m a half vampire.

Last Line:

Looking up at Evra, I wiped tears from my eyes, licked my lips, and asked in a voice that sounded a bit like that smart-ass kid I once knew, “Do we have any pickled onions?”

About the Book
Darren Shan was just an ordinary schoolboy until his visit to the Cirque Du Freak. Now, as he struggles with his new life as a Vampire’s Assistant, he tries desperately to resist the one temptation that sickens him, the one thing that can keep him alive. But destiny is calling. The Wolf Man is waiting.
Review
I picked up this book as soon as I finished the first one…I just had to find out what was to become of Darren Shan and Mr. Crepsley.  And, I was not one bit disappointed.  Darren is lonely and isn’t sure what is going to become of his future.  He refuses to drink human blood, even though they don’t kill anyone.  He just can’t bring himself to do it, even though he knows that if he doesn’t do it soon he will die.  Mr. Crepsley knows that he is miserable and asks if he would like to go back to the Cirque Du Freak.  Darren is thrilled at the opportunity.
Once there, he makes quick friends with Evra, the snake boy.  It is so nice to have a friend near his own age and he really doesn’t mind helping out around the circus, until Mr. Tiny shows up with the little people.  Darren thinks Mr. Tiny seems nice, but when he sees Mr. Tall and Mr. Crepsley both appear uncomfortable around him he knows that something isn’t right.  And, when they agree to let Evra and Darren be responsible for feeding the little people it seems even more unusual.
But, it’s ok because in their free time Evra and Darren meet Sam, a boy who isn’t afraid of them and wants nothing but their friendship.  And they really enjoy spending time together, even though Sam desperately wants to join the circus.  Even after Darren gets him tickets to the show it only makes him more interested.  Unfortunately tragedy strikes and Darren has to make a choice that will change his life forever.
I found this a quick easy read and even though it is geared towards young adults, it held my interest from start to finish.  Highly recommended!
