Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch. Dean and Kris and the entire OWN, have been a major influence in his journey to become a published writer. You can visit his website at www.joshua-graham.com, connect with him on facebook at www.facebook.com/j0shuagraham or twitter at www.twitter.com/j0shuagraham.

Could you please tell us a little about your book?
Beyond Justice is a book that pushes the boundaries of forgiveness, redemption and faith. Some have described it as a combination of John Grisham and Stephen King elements. I’m not sure if there is such a genre, but you might call it a supernatural legal thriller.

Who is your biggest supporter?
I count myself blessed to have the support of many professional writer colleagues that are members of the Oregon Writers Network. My two friends and colleagues, Susan Wingate and Michael Bellomo, with whom I meet on a regular basis have been an incredible source of feedback and encouragement as well. But by far, my greatest supporter is my beautiful with. Her belief in me, and sacrifice has afforded me the opportunity to pursue my dream of becoming the next bestselling author.

Your biggest critic?
My biggest critic is that inner voice within that tries to whisper all kinds of doubt. It’s my ego, my fear, my pride. But once I silence it, I find I’m able to get out of my own way and write much better.

Who has influenced you throughout your career as a writer?
Dean Wesley Smith has been the biggest influence in my career as a writer. He taught me, and many others so much about the craft and business of writing. I can safely say, had it not been for Dean, I would not have become a professional writer.

What is the most important thing in your life right now?
To be the best husband and father I can be, and to fulfill the calling on my life (writing to entertain and inspire.)

What are you currently working on?
I am completing a YA/Fantasy book which my son asked me to write for him. This is going to be written under a different pen name, as it is a completely different genre. But fans of Joshua Graham who are interested in this book need not fear. I will make the announcement of the title and pen name at the appropriate time.

Do you have any advice for writers or readers?
For writers: You are in charge of your own career. Not an agent, not a publisher, not your spouse. You. Therefore, make wise decisions with your eyes wide open. Do what it takes to hone your skills, and don’t let others control your writing by putting too much stock into the opinions of the wrong people. Once you let them into your writing office, you may as well walk away from writing. We face enough of a battle with our own inner critic. Don’t let others debilitate you with their opinions (unless they are the one writing you a check for your book—like a publisher. And then, only if you agree.) Google Heinlein’s Rules and follow them.

For readers: Support your favorite authors (hint-hint) by: 1. Buying their books. 2. Leaving them great reviews (on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, anywhere) if you enjoyed their work. 3. Spread the word. Tell your friends about the book and recommend it. If you are passionate about it, why not buy a copy for them? Did you know that THE SHACK, initially a self-published book sold about one million copies before a major publisher took on the book, primarily by word of mouth? Wouldn’t you love to say you helped make your favorite author a bestseller? It’s easy, spread the word!

Is there an author that inspired you to write?
There are several: Dean W. Smith, C.S. Lewis, John Grisham, Stephen King, and Sol Stein, among others.

What are some of your long term goals?
For each of my pen names to hit the top of the the New York Times bestseller list (and other lists.)

What do you feel has been your greatest achievement as an author?
Having a reader tell me that my book changed their views on life.

About Beyond Justice

THE DESCENT INTO HELL IS NOT ALWAYS VERTICAL…

Sam Hudson, a reputable San Diego attorney, learns this when the authorities wrongfully convict him of the brutal rape and murder of his wife and daughter, and sends him to death row. There he awaits execution by lethal injection.

If he survives that long.

In prison, Sam fights for his life while his attorney works frantically on his appeal. It is then that he embraces the faith of his departed wife and begins to manifest supernatural abilities. Abilities which help him save lives– his own, those of his unlikely allies–and uncover the true killer’s identity, unlocking the door to his exoneration.

Now a free man, Sam’s newfound faith confronts him with the most insurmountable challenge yet. A challenge beyond vengeance, beyond rage, beyond anything Sam believes himself capable of: to forgive the very man who murdered his family, according to his faith. But this endeavor reveals darker secrets than either Sam or the killer could ever have imagined. Secrets that hurtle them into a fateful collision course.

BEYOND JUSTICE, a tale of loss, redemption, and the power of faith.

Fed up with never seeing women or people of color depicted as savvy, hot shot attorneys in the legal thrillers she read, Pamela decided to create her own characters. Despite the demands of a busy legal career, Pamela accomplished her ambitious goal by rising at four in the morning to write before work, dedicating her weekends to writing and even spending her vacation time glued to her laptop for ten or more hours a day.

The Essence magazine bestselling author now has four fast-paced legal thrillers to show for her efforts: Every Reasonable Doubt (BET Books, February 2006), In Firm Pursuit (Harlequin, January 2007), Murder on the Down Low (Goldman House Publishing, September 2008) and Buying Time (Goldman House Publishing, November 2009). New York Times bestselling author Sheldon Siegel described Buying Time, Pamela’s first stand-alone novel, as a “deftly plotted thriller that combines the best of Lisa Scottoline and Robert Crais.”

Pamela has achieved a successful writing career while working as Managing Counsel for Labor and Employment Law for a large corporation in Southern California. Prior to that, she served as Employment Law Counsel for Raytheon Company and spent several years with the law firm of O’Melveny & Myers, LLP in Los Angeles. A former journalist, Pamela began her broadcasting career as a production assistant at WXYZ-TV in Detroit, where she was quickly promoted to news writer. To escape the chilly Detroit winters, she returned home to Los Angeles and worked at KCBS-TV as a news writer and associate producer.

Pamela has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from USC, a master’s degree in broadcasting from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and received her law degree from UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Southern California Chapter of Mystery Writers of America and is the Fiction Expert for BizyMoms.com.

Pamela is a frequent speaker on the topics of discrimination law, diversity, writing and pursuing your passion. She is married and lives in the Los Angeles area.
Don’t Give Up!

by Pamela Samuels Young

You’ve been working on your novel for months, maybe even years, and lately you feel more discouraged than ever. Perhaps it’s the disappointment of not having finished the book yet. Maybe you don’t know where to go next with your story. Or it’s possible that you’re just physically and emotional drained from all the time and effort you’ve poured into this dream. I’ve been there!

Each time I fall into the writing dumps, I wonder if I’ll ever dig myself out. Fortunately, I always do. You’ve put too much time into this venture. Now is not the time to give up.

Here are my top five tips for re-energizing yourself when you feel like giving up.

Read Inspirational Stories About Writing and Writers

Take a writing break and read about other successful writers who weathered the storm. Here are two excellent books to get you started:

Knit Together: Discovery God’s Pattern for Your Life by Debbie Macomber.

This book was such an inspiration to me. Macomber, a best selling writer with more than 100 million books in print, openly shares her story of writing rejection. Once you read about her writing journey, you’ll close the book anxious to get back to your own novel.

Rotten Reviews & Rejections, edited by Bill Henderson and Andre Bernard. This book shares the rejection letters and stinging reviews received by many successful and prolific writers, from Stephen King to Upton Sinclair to James Joyce and more. You’ll scratch your head at the discouraging rejection letters these wonderful writers received. They didn’t give up, and you shouldn’t either.

Don’t Strive for Perfect Prose

Many new writers think that everything that flows from their computer must be golden. Hence, if they write a few pages which doesn’t sound worthy of a Pulitzer, they’re disappointed. Forget about writing a perfect first draft. The most important part of writing is rewriting. Just concentrate on finishing a first draft. Then revise until you’re pleased with the final product.

Set a Writing Goal

Make a commitment to write a set number of pages per week. Can you commit to writing 10 or 15 pages per week? Or maybe committing to write three hours a day or three days a week works better for you. Whatever goal you set, make sure it’s realistic. Start out small and once you get into the flow of things, increase the goal. And if you fall short one week, don’t beat yourself up. There’s always next week.

Start a Writer’s Group

Put the word out that you’re looking to start a writer’s group. Tell friends, family members and colleagues that you’re looking for three or four serious writers who would like to build a supportive writing environment for themselves and other writers. You’ll probably have a lot of interest in the beginning, but only the serious writers will be around for the long haul. Establish a regular meeting time (at least once a month) and require at least two members to produce work for the group to critique each month.

Think About Your Story

Most people assume that if you’re not putting words on paper, then you’re not “writing.” I don’t feel that way. The next time you’re taking a long walk, standing in a grocery store line, or stuck in traffic, use the time to mull over your story. Think about your characters or your plot. Imagine your protagonist having a conversation. Think about how you might describe a room. Challenge yourself to invent a predicament that creates conflict for your character. If you come up with some great ideas, don’t forget to write them down.

Hang in there!

About Buying Time

Buying Time is a scandalous tale of blackmail, murder and betrayal, evoking John Grisham with a dash of Terry McMillan.

Waverly Sloan is a down-on-his-luck lawyer. But just when he’s about to hit rock bottom, he stumbles upon a business with the potential to solve all of his problems.

In Waverly’s new line of work, he comes to the aid of people in desperate need of cash. But there’s a catch. His clients must be terminally ill and willing to sign over rights to their life insurance policies before they can collect a dime. Waverly then finds investors eager to advance them thousands of dollars—including a hefty broker’s fee for himself—in exchange for a significant return on their investment once the clients take their last breath.

The stakes get higher when Waverly brokers the policy of the cancer-stricken wife of Lawrence Erickson, a high-powered lawyer who’s bucking to become the next U.S. Attorney General. When Waverly’s clients start dying sooner than they should, both Waverly and Erickson—who has some skeletons of his own to hide—are unwittingly drawn into a perilous web of greed, blackmail and murder.

Soon, a determined federal prosecutor is hot on Waverly’s trail. But when the prosecutor’s own life begins to unravel, she finds herself on the run—with Waverly at her side.

About Pamela Samuels Young

Corporate attorney Pamela Samuels Young has always abided by the philosophy that you create the change you want to see.

My Review

I have to admit that this is the first legal thriller that I have read. I tend to stick to mostly non-fiction, although my wife really pushed me to expand my reading horizons. And, I am also a big fan of all the legal shows on tv so I thought that I would give this book a shot. I am glad I did – not only was it mentally inticing, it read as if I was watching one of the shows I love so much only better.

This book is about Waverly Sloan – an attorney who has hit the lowest of the low and has actually been disbarred. Everyone in his life seems to want something from him and now that he doesn’t have the financial means to provide like he has in the past he isn’t sure what he is going to do. He is turned on to a quick money maker from an acquaintance of his and it seems like it might be the answer to his money woes. But at what cost?

This book was a true page turner leaving me wanting more. I would HIGHLY recommend it!
